Speaking of tenors...

...The Met in New York has announced casting for its Ring Cycle in 2012 (!) and Kaufmann is to be Siegmund. Forward planning or what.

Meanwhile, Richard Morrison in The Times says that La fille du regiment with Natalie Dessay and Juan Diego Florez is the hottest ticket in town........

(UPDATE: So does Ed Seckerson in The Independent...)

The Three Tenors: for Domingo, read Villazon; for Pavarotti, read Florez; for Carreras, read Kaufmann. Are these wonderful guys the future of opera? It's looking like it.

I'm against naming them "successors," as these three are marvelous artists in their own right. But, if you're going to name, do it right. ;-) IMHO Kaufmann will prove to be the heir to Domingo, at least in terms of the Heldentenor repertory and roles like Otello, while Villazon will stick to Italian and French opera, and Florez of course is the king of the high C's (but so much more). However you slice it, they are among the many fine young artists who are already bringing opera into the future, as you say. Love your blog!

I notice that your google ad on the left advertises tickets and events in Vienna, including an operetta called 'The Bad' by Strauss. It's 'Die Fledermaus'....

I am not sure that these ads really meet the very high standards of your blog.

oh dear!...sorry to hear about that. Given hand-to-mouth freelance existence here at JDCMB, trying to make some extra pennies didn't seem. in theory, too bad (or bat) an idea...

Anonymous, that's a good point about Domingo/Kaufmann et al - thanks!

The Google ad is small and not too bad an eyesore, if you can make a few pennies out of it, go for it, you never know when the next commission is coming along .... and meanwhile
YOU HAVE TO EAT!
