'Thorn in the flesh' dies at 94

The Russian composer Tikkhon Khrennikov has died at the age of 94, decades after the geniuses he helped to persecute. The Independent's obituary is rather kind to him.

UPDATE: Allan Kozinn in the New York Times is a little less kind.

Hi Jessica!
I love your Blog, which is really informative and well done. I just finished translating 6 interviews from the French to English that were done with Rostropovich in the last year of his life, which describes this terrible political censuring of the best people in the arts in the former USSR. Shostakovich is probably the greatest composer of the 20th century and there were so many powerful composers, musicians like Rostropovich and the great pianist and piano pedague Lev Natochenny (www.natochenny.com) and so many others, who left the USSR due to this kind of artistic repression. The USSR became artistically impoverished when many of them left to live elsewhere, while the rest of the world who received these wonderful artists has been greatly enriched. Thanks for all you are doing for classical music! Dr. David Abrams
