snowgold?

This is our street today. Apparently this is the heaviest snow in these parts for 19 years. You know, dear readers, where I'm meant to be this evening. And you know, too, that it only takes a fraction of this amount of snow to stop all transport in the UK. More precipitation is forecast for this afternoon. Hmm.

UPDATE, 1.50pm: TONIGHT'S PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN CANCELLED. All we have in place of Die tote Stadt is, er, a very dead city.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Also cancelled today is the first night of Jonathan Miller's new production of La Boheme at English National Opera. And several big West End jobs...

UPDATE, THURSDAY MORNING: I will now be attending the DTS performance next Wednesday, 11 February. Weather permitting.

Jessica, that's such a shame!

I saw it on Friday. I've loved the opera for years but my partner (whose PhD was on Gertrude Stein, so she's not exactly a pushover when it comes to late romanticism) had never heard it. By the final reprise of "Gluck das mir verblieb", tears were streaming down her face. For me, that'a a rather more meaningful comment on whether the opera is a success today than Messrs Hewitt, Christiansen et al have managed to put across so far.

I confess, even I was rather choked up - something for which years of listening to the Leinsdorf recording hadn't fully prepared me. I do so hope you get to see it soon, and witness a packed house roaring their applause for EWK - the ultimate critical verdict! I'm keeping all my fingers crossed for you and all the other Korngoldistas stuck in this wretched snow...

Thanks, Halldor...snuffle, snuffle..... There are a few more shows, so hopefully I will get into one of them.

A lot of cheesed-off Korngoldistas today, though - we had convened from various corners of the country and, indeed, the globe.

Watch this space, anyway.

You're kidding!!1 They cancelled because of a bit of snow!!! Unbelievable... I assume the underground still works, one puts theis boots on, leaves fancy dress at home and starts early... sigh... how can we give up to 20cm of snow!!! What'dya thing peaple did when there was no public transport and such? And what do people out in the country do? I hardly think live stops... This would not stop me on Thrusday to go to the performance, but i would be totally unhappy if they cancelled, that would be the end of my Tote Stadt as i can't make any other.... It snows like this in the rest of Europe every winter and life doesn't just stop... I had snow twiche as much for most of the first 30 years of my life and it was never a reason to board up inside, on the contrary, one enjoys the fresh air (finally the end of some of those viruses and bugs!!) and goes about their life as normally....
I'll cross my fingers things will start moving again and that most people who missed today can make it to the next ones!

"I assume the underground still works..." Oh, Hanclea, if only you were right! No, it doesn't, nor do the trains ('emergency' limited service, so you stand, wait and freeze for an hour) and most London buses have been suspended today too. It hasn't snowed as much as this in nearly 2 decades, but considerably less would produce the same effect in this normally green and pleasant land.

Welcome to Little Britain.

yep, just realised we ain't gonna be watching Boheme tonight either... Ok, i've got plenty of left over candles from xmas... peppermint and pine needle scent, streukuchen scent, even some green tea ones. I'll light them all and prey to all I know that things improve and by Thursday streets will be clear and music will flow :-) I'll even sacrifice my today's ration of dark chocolate if it will do any good! And ok, even tomorrow's.. ;-)
