Schubert to the Max

The ace violist Maxim Rysanov sent me this after the Schubert post went up yesterday. In his project 'Looking for Schubert' he's setting out to find the right piece of new music to complete a Schubert album. He invites composers to send in a work 6-8 minutes long for viola and string orchestra, inspired by our beloved Franz. Quite a novel way to go about things, this. Here he is to explain further.

Nice idea, but why not a Schubert work for Maxim instead???

The Romanze sung by Helene in "Die Verschworenen" with clarinet obbligato should work a treat on viola.

Here's the story.

A woman is lonely in a castle. She asks why her husband needs to keep heading off on all these crusades/ business trips, risking his life/ livelihood the Middle East.

In the delicious Schubertian modulation to the major at the end, hints at nice things which might happen to him when/if he comes home instead.

Is it that novel? Isn't Anne-Sophie Mutter doing the same thing? Trying to find a last piece for her "Encores" album by inviting applications...

It's certainly exciting, great for new music, an amazing thing. But novelty isn't everything. Certainly not here.
