oh my goodness...

I've discovered youtube.com at long last, and on it I found this. Roby Lakatos, live on Prinsengracht. Fiddle fetishists can find a whole new range of displacement activities to stop themselves getting on with their next book. At least I can now pass this off as research: Gypsy fiddling plays a part all its own in my book no.3. Then again, nobody should need an excuse to swoon over something as utterly, gloriously mind-boggling as this guy's violin playing.

And if Lakatos isn't your cup of string tea, you can also watch Heifetz galore and even some footage of Jacques Thibaud playing Szymanowski......

Heck, and I thought chocolate was addictive.

Hi JD, Have to upgrade before I can regularly view YouTube. Roby's a great guy - I interviewed him in Brussels last Christmas. A real gent, and a killer soloist.

You Tube, apart from having some quite nice examples of violin playing, also has some very sad, unfortunate samples of "self-advertising" on it though, see the pieces played by: Sarah Shy violin 2005/12 ... they sound like some unwilling cat has been dragged around the room in pain.... poor girl ...... how can parents be so vain to let their youngster
suffer so much ...so be choosy in what you look at and waste your time with, Jessica

Thank you so much for the YouTube alert. I have found Francescatti, Haendel, Szigeti, Milstein, Oistrakh, and more. Among pianists, my first interest, Kempff, Backhaus, Horszowski, Cherkassky, Serkin, Richter, Cziffra, and a host from later generations. Do not miss Sokolov playing Couperin. There is some astonishing pianism and musicianship among these videos. Your blog is such a pleasure!

The same Lakatos videos are on his website.

They are QuickTime videos and - seems to me - rather better quality than those on YouTube.
