Tomorrow

Eh-oop, I'm about to leave for Sheffield, where tomorrow I'm taking part in the Readers' Day at the Off the Shelf Festival of Writing and Reading. Hodder & Stoughton is sending five of its authors (Sophie Hannah, Martin Davies, Margaret Murphy, Robert Douglas & yours truly) and one of its editors and we're going to spend the day talking about books! The day includes lunch, fun and bookwormish goody-bags for all.

I felt I needed to contact you before you got yourself into any trouble. When greeting any Yorkshire folk you should say, 'Ay-up'.
If your host approaches you with,'Ah-cud eet a 'scabby-donkey tween tu Bre't-vans', then that's ok if you are really hungry, however 'Abit-a'snap', (snack) might be more appropriate, such as a 'Growler', (Pork pie). You could wash it down with a Ferkin, (beer).
Don't 'Allus at't last push up', (always at the last moment) otherwise you may miss the festival.
I am actually from Kent myself but have been adopted by Lancashire, (the right side of the Peninnes), however my husband is a Yorkshireman, so I feel qualified to comment.
So good luck at the festival, and 'Sith-ee', (Goodbye).

Thanks, Anna! I got into trouble with the copy-editor of RITES OF SPRING for using an incorrect spelling for the noise made by the family cat. It should, apparently, have been 'miaouw', not 'meow'. I'm convinced that Solti, resident ginger mog, says 'meow' as a matter of course, but there we go. I could have fallen into equal disgrace in Sheffield. Glad to say I didn't, at least not quite.

I'm with Solti on this one as is our resident ginger mog Ramsbottom. Meow is his preferred form of conversation which seems to serve him well. Miaouw is more the sort of sound he makes if you step on his tail by mistake.
