Why are the maestros ditching the white tie?

Here's my latest bit of fun from the Indy, in today's edition.

A few lines were cut, notably the one about the pianist who won't wear round-collared black jackets because where he comes from, it's the garb of choice of Russian criminals; and the way that Daniel Harding makes up for not actually looking like Simon Rattle by conducting with his mouth open. But I'm glad the truth about those ridiculous black shirts at the BBC Symphony Orchestra has had a chance to be aired.

Hi,

I am sure you are not surprised to learn that our concert atire in the BBCSO has been a hot topic for discussion for quite some time even before your article!

What would you like to see us wear? I agree that all-black is too self-effacing and drab, tails are hot, uncomfortable and strange for an orchestra specialising in 21st century music, white jackets I like for Proms and summer concerts but the rest of the year......? Any suggestions?

Hahaha, Simon Rattle makes such hilarious faces. I have choir stall seats for the OAE's Schumann symphony two-day thingie at the RFH in December and it's going to take all my power not to giggle at least once.

Vlad is keeping his hair pretty under control these days it seems, I saw him at the cashpoint on my way into work yesterday.

It always looks like bow ties are patently not made for wearing while playing violin though - they look like one end gets caught underneath the shoulder rest or something, the other end sticking out at strange angles.

2nd violinist, I am still chewing over this. Difficult, eh? Personally I'd rather you were back in your white ties: it looks distinguished, unlike the black shirts which are a bit reminiscent of a West End musical pit band.

Erin, your comment about the bow ties reminds me of my old duo partner - the one who was killed in a car crash 18 months ago, mentioned on JDCMB - who had a huge black velvet bow tie that he insisted on wearing for every single concert because his mum had given it to him. It always looked virtually up-ended under the violin - and much more prominently so than a white tie, which would be better camouflaged........

I am fine with the white tie, or a black bow tie as long as it is not as big as a bat - but tails? Soooo 18th Century! Dinner jackets? Makes me feel like the Maitre D. Black suits, white shirts and straight tie? Office wear. Maybe we do need Trinny and Susanna? Gok would just have us playing naked!

Actually, that would do it. Let's get Trinny and Susanna to dress the BBCSO! This has got to be possible.........
