Philippe Hirshhorn plays Chausson...

Thanks to good old Youtube, here is a clip of this phenomenal yet not widely recognised Russian violinist playing the Chausson Poeme. Hirshhorn, who died of a brain tumour in 1996 aged 50, is something of a legend in violinistic circles and this playing, along with some perceptive comments from Mischa Maisky, helps to prove why.

Many thanks for this, my first opportunity to hear Hirshhorn. Items about him I have read seem to intimate that he was hugely hampered by nerves and, even more, by a quest for the unreachable: perfection. This excerpt from the Chausson immediately brought to my mind Ginette Neveu's performance. It is quite wonderful. I have read of recordings of the Beethoven and Berg concertos, and possibly the first Paganini, and I shall go on a hunt for those. Thanks again. Philip
