Being a woman too, I don't know the answer. Try it and see!
The film is rather good too, as it happens (starring Romola Garai as Cassandra, with music by our favourite Dario Marianelli), so you could give that a go if you want to save time.
It's a while since I read it, but I remember being moved, amused and enchanted by the characters, and entirely gripped by the story. Speaking as a guy I'd say give it a go - at worst you'll find it a short and easy read (and that you'll be to discuss their favorite novel with such excellent writers as our Jessica and J K Rowling), at best you'll find your eyes opening to some colours you never knew existed.
Ah - is it JKR's favourite book too?!? Probably the last time I shall ever be mentioned in the same breath as her...
but she is one of the people I most admire on earth because she's got a whole generation of kids to read books. Lots of people will say that isn't true, and of course one can't guarantee that thanks to Harry Potter they will definitely go on to Tolstoy, Pasternak and Nabokov - but if they don't read *something* when small then they certainly won't!

Is it a book for all readers? I say this as virtually all who appreciated it on the 'amazon' site are women.
